    Open-end response coding: from manual prompt to industrial pipeline

    Coding open-ended responses means turning free text into comparable categories. An experienced market researcher can do this by hand.     The four stages of a professional pipeline

    1. Preparation

    Filter non-analyzable responses ("don't know", "n/a", spam, bots), detect language, normalize characters, identify cut-off or duplicate responses. Skip this step and everything downstream is contaminated.
