    NVivo, by Lumivero, is qualitative and mixed-methods analysis software, and it works with surveys too: it imports responses from Qualtrics or SurveyMonkey and exports to SPSS. The difference is what job each one is built for.

    When NVivo is the better fit

    If your team also analyzes in-depth interviews, focus groups, documents or video, NVivo covers all of that in one project, with queries to cross your coding. Survey Coder does not do that: it is built only for open-ended survey responses.

    When Survey Coder is the better fit

    If your work is a survey program — a monthly NPS, a brand tracker, concept tests — and the codes need to come back into your data as variables and end up in tables, wave after wave with the same codebook. That is what it is built for: AI does the first pass and your team puts its judgement where it's actually needed.

    What one company found when it compared

    A services company compared our coding of its NPS with its own, across every response. They agreed on around 96% — and when it reviewed the differences, it found several came from errors in its own coding.

      If it is everything, a general qualitative analysis program makes sense. If it is surveys, look for something built for surveys.

      What do you need at the end: the codes in your data, or the tables too?

      Both export to SPSS. Ask whether the result lands in your own file, one row per respondent, and whether it includes the tab book or someone builds it afterwards.

      Do you measure in waves and need the same codebook in all of them?

      Ask to see how the codebook carries from one wave to the next, on your own data.

      Where is your data processed?

      NVivo 15's AI Assistant uses OpenAI; per its help (September 2026), that data is not used to train models and is deleted after each operation. Survey Coder uses Claude models, by Anthropic. Always ask.

      Do you pay per user or for what you code?

      With many occasional users or uneven volume, the pricing model changes the real cost a lot.
